For a successful varnish

  • Precaution:
    - Sand the wood in following the grain with the right sandpaper for the solid wood type or plywood.
    - Remove the dust
    - Application of the cellulose varnish or polyurethane in light crossed layer (lengthways and then crossways) rather than a thick layer, which will dry more slowly and make the surface less clean.
  • Drying:
    - Intermediate cleaning
2 layers of varnish diluted to 20-30 % depending on the quality of cellulose varnish or polyurethane
    - Drying
    - Finish: to maintain the wood, wax

Hand varnishing (traditionally called "stamp varnish") "gumming"

  • Sand the solid wood, plywood or inlay with medium (gr 120) or fine (gr 240) sandpaper .
  • Make a varnish stamp with a meche wrapped in varnishing cloth. It must fit into the palm of your hamd. Pour a little varnish on to the meche, rub it in. Apply on to the surface to be varnished to make a thin shiny layer. Put the first layer by making large round circular movements.
  • Apply the 2nd layer with larger circles. Repeat several times.
  • As soon as the stamp dries out, pour more varnish on to the mech and addd a little varnish alcohol to avoid circular lines. The varnish, after this, should be even, very shiny and with no faults, apart from a few traces of oil which will be removed with the "shining". Fot his, you need to change the stamp and put a little alcohol on the stamp surface. Then, with a quick and light hand, rub the surface with alcohol all over until there is no more oil... mission over!
